Insured Art Shipping and Logistics: What Collectors Should Demand

Fine-art logistics is the single most under-budgeted line in a first acquisition. A hairline crack in a stretched canvas, a temperature excursion in a shipping container, or a customs hold on a misclassified work can erase years of appreciation. Treat logistics as part of the artwork's cost basis from day one.

Museum-grade crating is not optional

A proper crate is built to the work — internal foam saddles, silica-controlled humidity, and shock indicators on the outer shell. Anything less is a consumer freight box with a premium label.

Climate-controlled transit and vaulting

Temperature and humidity swings are the leading cause of long-term damage to works on paper, panel, and canvas. Insist on transit and short-term storage that maintains eighteen to twenty-two degrees Celsius and fifty percent relative humidity.

Title insurance vs. transit insurance

Transit insurance covers physical loss in movement. Title insurance covers a later challenge to your legal ownership — a restitution claim, an undisclosed lien, or a disputed inheritance. For any work above the low six figures, both are standard.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

How much does it cost to ship fine art internationally?
White-glove international shipping typically runs five to twelve percent of the hammer price for works above one square meter, including crating, climate-controlled transit, customs brokerage, and installation. Smaller works and regional deliveries fall well below that band.
Do I need special insurance for a fine artwork in transit?
Yes. Standard homeowner and freight policies exclude or cap fine art. A dedicated fine-art transit policy — arranged through the marketplace or a specialist broker — covers physical loss, and title insurance protects against later legal challenges to ownership.
